gray called for gray to resign in wake of the campaign scandal. he also took himself out of any race to replace the mayor. tom sherwood is here with the latest on this story. >> reporter: some people thought he was criticizing gray to make his own race for mayor. now that's off the table. on thursday mayor vincent gray was being pursued by reporters after a "the washington post" poll showed 54% of d.c. citizens want him to resign because of scandal. gray insists he's doing his job and will leave the scandal to the courts. on the wamu politics hour friday d.c. council member, the first to call last week for gray to resign said gray has lost his ability to lead even though he hasn't been formally charged. >> think he knew. i think knows he knows. i think many people know it's reflected in the polls, i think he lost his legitimacy to govern in light of a compromised

5:16 pm
out there today on the cool dreary side of things. your temperatures today just in the 70s, making it one of the coolest days that we've had in more than a month. wow. after a high temperature of 101 on tuesday. here's a look at some of the rainfall totals over the last 24 hours. anywhere you see the dark green, the yellow, mainly d.c., areas to the north and east. anywhere from two to three to four inches of rain. take a look at the totals here. baltimore maryland, 3.25 inches of rain. ocean city over four inches of rain. annapolis maryland over half. gaithersburg, maryland, montgomery county, .78 inch of rain. what we're left after these showers and waves of rain mainly light rain moving through today. we're left with this. montgomery county south of gaithersburg, fairfax towards charles county moving east into prince george's county. more ragged showers down to the south and west of us.
5:17 pm
a stronger line that's just now getting into west virginia. but not as fierce as it was yesterday. starting to break up. still some pockets of embedded thunderstorms and that means a chance to get some isolated heavy rain. starting about 8:00 and running up to midnight to 1:00 a.m. in the morning. 77 degrees. cool. showery and northeast wind too. 16 miles per hour. almost need a jacket out there this evening. by midnight, 11:00 p.m. drop to 75, 74 degrees. tomorrow morning right in town we'll be starting out in the low 70s. still some wet weather around and in fact a little cool on the north side of this front. so getting up to gaithersburg, get up to areas around frederick and even into northern fauquier county, chilly tomorrow morning. this weather front sticks around us through the weekend. it depends on where it sets up tomorrow afternoon. right now, though, it looks like it will be south of d.c., running right through southern maryland and the northern neck so around those areas could see
5:18 pm
some more isolated thunderstorms for saturday afternoon after the morning showers. then on sunday again the potential for some storms south, some rain builds up right around the mountains and i-81. just a slight chance for showers on sunday and our best day out of the weekend. evening occasional heavy rains coming in, 70 to 78 degrees with a southwest wind at 5 miles per hour. for tomorrow morning a cooler start for us. even a little muggy too before we see that humidity climb during the afternoon. the showers that we'll have back to small umbrella or just really a rain jacket if you're heading out. 66 to 72 degrees for tomorrow afternoon. 77 to 81. another cool day and then sunday i think the better day out of weekend highs in the mid-80s and highs in the low 90s the first part of next week. a lot of folks trying to get to the beach. all right. determining which size umbrella to takes sounds a whole lot better than take cover immediately. >> so true.
5:19 pm
>> put that in perspective, i guess. >> we want to return our attention now the tragedy in colorado. the suspect there had four guns on him including a shotgun and a rifle. nbc news pete williams joins us. pete, we one you have new details about the shooter's appearance. >> reporter: well, you know, this has been rumored about since the police chief ray kelly mentioned this. there's a connection because you a errora, colorado police chief worked in the new york police department and has many friends there, and it's apparently true that the shooting suspect james holmes had dyed his hair red and told the aurora police when he was arrested this morning he was the joker, you know, what that means with the larger significance of that is i don't have the slightest idea. it remains a total mystery about why he, why he did this, what the motive was. there's no good answer to that. >> guy was pretty heavily armed and too early to know the answer
5:20 pm
to this question, how did he get the guns and were they legal? >> reporter: yes they were all purchased legally, all in the colorado area. three separate gun stores, all local stores of national chains. he didn't buy them until very recently. he bought the first of them in may and the last of them one of the two hand guns only two weeks ago. so it would appear from that that he was planning this at least as far back as may. >> did he go through all the required checks and everything? >> reporter: oh, yes. he's no criminal record whatsoever. the aurora, colorado police say his only connection to them was a speeding ticket last year. but other than that he had no prior convictions, he was not a felon, didn't have any of the other disqualifying factors in his background and purchased these weapons legally all very recently. colorado is not, you know, doesn't that have loosest handgun or gun control laws in the nation but as a western

. our top story tonight, 12 people are dead, 59 others wounded in a mass shooting inside a movie theater in aurora, colorado. police arrested the gunman, 24-year-old james holmes about a minute after the first 911 phone calls. he even dyed his hair the color red like the joker in the movie "the dark knight rises." officers are trying to get in his apartment said to be bobby trapped. he wore body armor and used an assault rifle, a shotgun and glock handgun. witnesses described the scene in the theater. >> james egan holmes was a graduate student. he was originally from san diego where his parents still live. we go outside of the home of his mother in san diego tonight. christine, what's the situation there? >> reporter: good evening to you. we can tell you as you mentioned
5:33 pm
the suspect did indeed spend a great deal of his life right here in suburban san diego. this is his mother's home. a lot of cars are here. intense media presence as well. all of the world is watching over this situation. we talked with high school friends of james today. they tell us that and he was quiet and a normal kid, certainly not someone they would expect to be behind such a horrible crime. james holmes graduated from westview high school in san diego in 2006. he lived just a few blocks away from school where a long time neighbor today remembers him as quiet and very smart. >> i feel so bad for his parents. they are just really nice folk, i feel terrible for these victims and my feeling is what happened? >> reporter: another neighbor says the holmes family was nice and outgoing. >> it breaks my heart because they are lovely parents. >> reporter: holmes left san diego after high school. university confirms holmes grad

dwatd a neuroscience agree in 2010. holmes mother still lives in the family home. she called police to the home after reporters first arrived early this morning. holmes father robert threat home escorted by police. >> as you can understand the holmes family is very upset about all of this. it's a tragic event and it's taken everyone by surprised. >> reporter: the family issued a statement asking for privacy. our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy. our family is cooperating with authorities both in san diego and aurora. we're still trying to process this information and we appreciate that people will respect our privacy. >> reporter: another friend actually talked to us today and said that they felt he was a happy and smiling kid usually when he was in high school here in suburban san diego. just a moment here i want to show you all the media presence and all the family friends gathering at this home. we're told arlene, james' mother is still indeed inside and has no plans to couldn't. we asked for a spokesperson from the family to talk with us.
5:35 pm
at this point they have no comment. now back to you. >> thank you. the tragedy in colorado now has law enforcement officials across the country on high alert and it turns out prince george's county police were already preparing to train for a mass shooting today. pat collins has our report. >> reporter: a chilling coincidence, a mass shooting drill by prince george's county police hours after the mass shooting at that movie theater in colorado. now they planned this for months but today it takes on a whole new meaning. >> we thought it was important on the heels of the tragedy in colorado to demonstrate to our community that we do have policies, procedures in place. >> reporter: the scenario. gunmen on the loose at a high school in upper marlboro. they had pretend victims. real snipers and s.w.a.t. team specialist, bomb squad, k-9s and

in all our stormy weather should you drive with your hazard lights on during a big thunderstorm. how do you get rid of the mildew smell in towels and wash cloths. >> driving with your hazard lights on or head lights on are important. >> our first question comes in from connie in springfield, virginia. she wants to know should you drive with your flashing hazard lights on during inclement weather such as severe thunderstorms. >> we contacted several jurisdictions to get this answer. it turns out drivers are normally supposed to turn on their head lights fully on instead of using those flashing hazard lights during severe weather. virginia state police say a driver should keep head lights constantly lit when using their windshield wipers to improve visibility. maryland law also requires drivers to turn on their head
5:42 pm
lights whenever their windshield wipers are in use and in times of inclement weather. in d.c. hazard lights should only be used during a traffic hazard that requires unusual care in overtaking or passing. not typical to drive with thats on, definitely your head lights. >> that wiper rule i like that one. next question comes from an e-mail and a viewer named leon. he wants to know how to prevent that mildew smell coming out of your towels and wash cloths. >> we spoke with the folks of the american cleaning institute for the answer. i want says don't take any short cuts when it comes to washing your towels. make sure you're following the manufacturer's directions exactly. another tip check your towels are 100% dry before putting them away. even a small amount of moisture can make those towels smell sour. and if a towel already has an odor, the institute says wash it on the hot cycle and add one
5:43 pm
half cup of baking soda to your wash. so give that a try. >> all right. final question comes from richard in arlington. richard wants to know what's the difference between fruit spread like jams, jellies and preserves. >> if you're picking your own blackberries you want to know this. the juice product association gave us this answer. fda has developed a standard for jams, jellies and preserves. so a jelly is a mixture of fruit juice, sugar and sometimes pectin. just juice in that one. jam is a thick mixture of the fruit itself, sugar and often pectin. fruit in yam is cooked down and very soft. preserves almost identical to jam but they often have large chunks of fruit or whole fruit in them. so, yeah. jams, jellies and preserves. there's a difference. >> preserves closest to the real deal. >> jelly is the clearest. >> doreen, back to you. >> coming up a well-known police

so one of the big questions today, could something have been done to prevent this tragedy in colorado? >> good question. dwayne stanton a detective with the metro poll tan police department here in d.c. he's now president and director of progressive security consultants where he works on high-profile and celebrity cases. it's clear there's a whole lot we still don't know about this suspect and exactly what happened. but based on what we do know you've got some ideas. >> unfortunately now is the point where the investigation actually starts. you have to start digging and probing into the background on
5:48 pm
mr. holmes, his activities, his behavior and everything he's done not only over the past couple of days, weeks, months and even years. i'm of the opinion -- there's a couple of things. did mr. holmes have a complete mental breakdown. it's possible. the probability exists that mr. holmes has associated himself with a character in the batman movie. be it the ridler, the joker, or maybe even one of the s.w.a.t. members of the local police department. he was armed with body armor, helmet, goggles, gas masks, cs gas, weapons. it's all a part of his 15 minutes of fame, if you will. >> and you had pointed out earlier too that he was arrested without incident and that's important. >> that's very important because in most cases the perpetrator does what? suicide by police, he allows the
5:49 pm
police to shoot him or he shoots himself. he didn't want that to happen in this particular case because he wanted to be here to tell his story. >> he wants to it play out. >> he wants to tell them not only did do i this, did i commit this crime my apartment is bobby trapped. you don't want to go there either. >> what are you thinking of when you see the police trying to go into this apartment. >> they have to be meticulous and bring in the experts of the experts. no question about it. >> speaking of meticulous, this is something that has been in the planning stages for perhaps months. >> at least. at least. this guy went out, i under he purchased weapons back in may. it takes a while to compile all this ammunition, all the materials needed. and the one thing i must say is, our tag line here in washington, d.c. is if you see something say something. that didn't happen. because someone somewhere saw mr. holmes making these
5:50 pm
